Keeping bugs away from your furry friend doesn't have to involve harsh chemicals. Essential oils are a natural and effective way to repel insects while also caring for your dog's skin. Here's a guide to creating your homemade bug repellent using essential oils that are safe and beneficial for dogs.

When it comes to repelling specific insects, certain essential oils work wonders:

Fleas: Cedarwood, Eucalyptus, Lavender, Lemongrass

Mosquitoes: Geranium, Lavender, Lemon, Lemongrass

Ticks: Geranium

You can mix these oils according to your preference, ensuring a pleasant scent while keeping bugs at bay.

Ingredients

  • 1 x Amber/Blue glass spray bottle

  • 100 drops Essential Oil combination (e.g., 30 drops Lavender, 30 drops Geranium, 20 drops Lemongrass, 20 drops Peppermint)- 1 Tablespoon vodka (use straight vodka without flavors or sugar)

Instructions:

  1. Pour apple cider vinegar into the spray bottle.

  2. Add vodka.

  3. Add witch hazel.

  4. Add 100 drops of essential oils.

  5. Shake well to mix.

Application Tips

Before heading outdoors, spray the repellent from your dog's head to tail, avoiding eyes, wounds, and mucous membranes. Pay extra attention to exposed areas like the belly and ears. DIY repellents are effective but require regular reapplication compared to commercial options.

Shake the bottle well before each use as oils and water may naturally separate over time.

Safety Precautions

While essential oils are generally safe for dogs, some may be sensitive to certain oils. Watch for any reactions when using the spray for the first time and avoid using oils that cause irritation.

By using this homemade bug repellent, you not only protect your dog from pesky insects but also promote their overall well-being with natural ingredients.
